Honnold began climbing in a climbing gym when he was five years old. He put in a lot of work and was climbing “several times a week” by the age of ten. Honnold competed in national and international youth climbing competitions as a youngster.

Honnold rose to prominence after a solo ascent of Half Dome’s Regular Northwest Face in 2012, which was documented in the video Alone on the Wall and included in a 60 Minutes interview.
