As a Politician

Andrew Yang, a former presidential contender, has filed papers to run for mayor of New York. The story was initially reported by NBC 4 New York, which cited confirmation from the city’s Campaign Finance Board. Yang will run to succeed current New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, who is serving his final term.

Yang, a longtime New Yorker, first gained prominence as a 2020 Democratic presidential primary contender, concentrating his campaign on the promise of a universal basic income. Yang was also outspoken about the dangers posed by automation, as well as how the opioid epidemic and greater societal upheaval were being fueled by its economic repercussions.

Yang’s candidacy was successful in establishing a loyal following, but he was unable to get broader support, and he dropped out of the race in February after a disappointing showing in the Iowa caucuses.
