Cora and Ellen are a pair of sisters in their forties. The novel catapults itself into the past before the women meet and the plot really begins. Cora wants to go to college and become a biochemist. Ellen is a recent immigrant with plans to start her own company.
Years pass and Ellen and Daniel are in the midst of a tumultuous divorce, made a little easier by the fact that he has fled to Barbados. Regardless of the pain, he has caused her, Ellen remains in love with him and has no idea that her best friend’s youngest kid Col is her ex’s son. Cora, on the other hand, is still battling life and mourning her guilt.
The truth of her son’s paternity could never be divulged to her neighbor. When Daniel returns, Cora realizes she doesn’t have time to tell Ellen the truth, and that all of her friends and neighbors, who are aware of her secret, advise her to do so.
While hosting a dinner party, Ellen, Cora, and a few of their neighbors are completely inebriated. Cora acknowledges that Ellen and Daniel have the son Ellen has always wanted. Ellen kicks everyone out and isolates herself in her apartment for days, including Cora. Daniel returned to Ellen after dinner and was immediately greeted with hostility.
