He was raised in the Roman Catholic faith of his Irish-American father. He had no idea that his mother’s family was Jewish until he was in his early teens. Bill is the only person in his family who has never married. According to him, “My wives don’t want their husbands to play with me since I’m the last of my man pals who hasn’t married. In 2003, he began dating Coco Johnsen, a former Playboy Cyber Girl, and this was his first public romance.

The two split up after around 17 months of dating, and Johnsen sued Maher for US$9 million for allegedly making “insulting, humiliating, and degrading racial insults” as well as causing “pain and suffering” on her. On May 2, 2005, the charges were dropped due to a lack of evidence, and the case was dismissed.

In 2005, he began a new relationship, this time with Karrine Steffans, a former hip hop model, and best-selling novelist. From 2009 to 2011, Bill dated Cara Santa Maria, a science educator and co-host of Skeptics’ Guide to the Universe. In 2014, he started dating Canadian singer Anjulie Persaud for the second time.
