Livesay began his career in journalism as a volunteer at his local NPR-affiliated radio station, KJZZ in Phoenix, Arizona, and went on to work for “All Things Considered” and “Morning Edition.” He was the first American TV journalist to report from Libya in about a year in 2018, and he was forced to escape the country after receiving threats from the government for exposing migrant trafficking, torture, and abuse. He was one of the first TV journalists to report from the front lines of the Iraqi military’s fight against ISIS in Mosul in 2016.
When the country was at the center of the crisis in March, Livesay was the first correspondent for an American television network to walk inside an ICU in Italy, where physicians used dive masks as ventilators as supplies ran out. He’s just returned from northern Italy, where cemeteries couldn’t keep up with the number of bodies. In Venice, Livesay met with volunteers who brought goods to people in need in gondolas along the city’s famed canals. He reported this week from Venice that nature is thriving, with streets and canals largely devoid of people and vehicles.
Before joining CBS News, Livesay worked for NBC News, PBS NewsHour, PBS Frontline, and NPR News, reporting from all around the world. He brings a lot of foreign experience to CBS News, having covered a number of big events with global ramifications, including the targeted execution of Iranian General Qassim Soleimani, the Hong Kong uprisings, and the Vatican priest sex abuse scandals.
