Derek Chauvin was born in 1976 and served as a police officer in the United States. His father was a certified municipal accountant, while his mother was a stay-at-home mom. His mom and dad separated when he was seven years old. He graduated from Park High School in Minnesota with a GED certificate. He then enrolled in Dakota County Technical College, where he earned a certificate in quantity food preparation.
From 1996 through 2004, he was a member of the United States Army Reserve. He joined the Minneapolis Police Department (MPD) in 2001. After working off duty as a guard, he received a medal for valor in 2006 and a commendation medal in 2008.
