Barr began her career as a journalist at 2-Ten FM before becoming a freelance journalist in 1994, focusing in sports reporting and covering sporting events.

She went from radio to television five years later, joining Meridian Broadcasting in 1996 as a sports reporter/presenter for Meridian Tonight, a nightly news show based in Newbury, Berkshire, as well as presenting for sports program A406. Barr joined the London News Network in 1999 as a sports reporter and host of LWT’s Goals Extra show. Barr joined ITV News as the first female sports journalist in 2001.
