Freddie Highmore Career
TV Shows and Movies
Before starring in Finding Neverland in 2004, Highmore featured in a number of films and television shows, including a young King Arthur in The Mists of Avalon (2001), the films Two Brothers (2004) and Five Children and It (2004) and the comedy Women Talking Dirty (1999).
Finding Neverland (2004), directed by Marc Forster, was Highmore’s first film as a leading man. Highmore portrayed Peter Llewelyn Davies and worked alongside Johnny Depp (who played J.M. Barrie) and Kate Winslet (who played his mother Sylvia.) Depp and the young actor formed a bond, and the two remain in contact to this day.
‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’
A year later, in Tim Burton’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005), Highmore collaborated with Depp once more. Highmore was supposedly cast as the youthful Charlie Bucket, while Depp played Willy Wonka, the eccentric owner of the chocolate factory.
Beginning of 2013, Highmore debuted in Bates Motel as Norman Bates, the violent protagonist from Alfred Hitchcock’s 1960 film Psycho. Bates depicted by Highmore was a younger version of the character played by Anthony Perkins in the film. Bates Motel was intended to serve as a “prequel” to the film. Norman’s mother, played by Vera Farmiga, had already died in the renowned film when the episode premiered.
After the five-season run of Bates Motel came to an end in 2017, Highmore jumped right into The Good Doctor, reading a screenplay just three days after the final episode of Bates Motel aired.
‘The Good Doctor’
Highmore received appreciation for his portrayal of a young doctor with autism who struggled in his connections with other people in the show’s fictional hospital, both patients and coworkers, in The Good Doctor, which premiered in September 2017.
However, the protagonist, Dr. Shaun Murphy, is a genius who is adept at finding diagnoses that others miss, saving lives in the process. His brilliance also extends to a seemingly limitless ability to conduct complex procedures, despite his youth and lack of expertise.
Highmore earned back-to-back Critics’ Choice Movie Awards for Best Young Performer for his appearances in Finding Neverland and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Highmore did not go ignored when he first started working on Bates Motel, winning a People’s Choice Award in the process.
He was awarded a Golden Globe for Best Performance by a Television Actor – Drama for his work in The Good Doctor, but was defeated by Sterling K. Brown in This Is Us that year.
