George Lessens Career

George Lessens is the Chief Meteorologist for WZZM 13 and an award-winning certified meteorologist from the United States (TEGNA). In 1980, he became a weekend meteorologist for 13 ON YOUR SIDE.
George has been obsessed with weather since the 1965 Palm Sunday tornadoes in West Michigan. He was born and raised in Lowell, Michigan, where he started a weather club to track storms and tornadoes as a child. Despite never having seen a tornado, he has been in the path of many of them.

His hometown was hit by a little tornado on his 21st birthday, early in the morning. His family members warned George about the approaching storm. The Lowell Showboat was destroyed, a church steeple fell, and the village was seriously damaged. He survived a “derecho” windstorm in a van parked beneath a highway bridge overpass over the Fourth of July holiday weekend in 1991!
Another “derecho” hit West Michigan on 31 May 1998, and he stayed the night co-anchoring nearly 12 hours of continuous severe weather coverage from the 13 ON YOUR SIDE studios. Throughout his time at 13 ON YOUR SIDE, George has been recognized and honored with various distinctions.

In March 2009, the National Association of Television Arts and Sciences honored him with the “Silver Circle” award for service of 25 years or more. In 2003, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013, and 2015 he received the Michigan Association of Broadcasters’ “Best Weathercast” award. In 2003, 2007, 2012, and 2017, he was awarded the “Merit Weathercast” award four times. George was awarded Michigan Emmys for Weather in 2005 and 2009.
Grand Rapids Community College recognized him a “Distinguished Alumnus” in 2008, and Lowell High School also called him a “Distinguished Alumnus.” The Muskegon County “Farm Bureau Agricultural Service Award,” UPI Michigan Broadcasters’ Best Graphics accolades, the Detroit Press Club Foundation award for TV Documentary on “The Flood of ’86,” and a Michigan Emmy nomination for “Toys for Tots” are among his accomplishments.
