Homer comes from a poor family in Laurel, Mississippi, on the southeastern edge of the state. He worked hard for his future through education, and he was able to attend the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, as an engineering major.
During his freshman year, he received a call to the ministry, which he accepted and enrolled in Mississippi College to continue his education. Later, he enrolled at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, North Carolina. He was previously a pastor in both North and South Carolina before he joined Second Baptist Houston Church in 1978. He became a church leader, and under his leadership, the church’s attendance has nearly quadrupled from an average of 500 to over 24,000 now. Homer was elected as the Southern Baptist Convention’s first president in June 1992. (SBC). He was re-elected to the post for the second time in June 1993.
