Jim Carrey Career

He began creating faces in front of a mirror at the age of eight and developed an aptitude for doing impressions. When Carrey was 10 years old, he addressed a letter to Carol Burnett of the Carol Burnett Show, saying that he was already a master of impressions and that he should be regarded for a job on the show; he was overjoyed when he obtained a form letter reply. At the age of 15, he made his professional stand-up comedy debut at a Toronto club, and by 1979, he was able to support himself as a comedian.

He wrote a lot of his own material as an opening act for Buddy Hackett and Rodney Dangerfield. He was recognized for his great energy and frenzied improvisation, as well as his largely visual comedic appeal. He had over 100 characterizations, ranging from Humphrey Bogart to Kermit the Frog, and was a technically proficient mimic. At the age of 19, Carrey moved to Hollywood and started to act in films and television series. In 2004, he was granted dual citizenship in the United States and Canada.

Carrey appeared on Monty Python’s Best Bits (Mostly) in 2014, recalling the effect on him of Ernest Scribbler (played by Michael Palin) laughing himself to death in the comedy “The Funniest Joke in the World.” “You’ll see why right away: Palin’s acting is uncannily Carreyesque,” says Radio Times.
His family became homeless and resided in a Volkswagen van for a period, while Jim and his brother slept in a tent in Charles Daley Park on the Lake Ontario shore in Lincoln, Ontario for months. His father obtained work in the accounting department of the Titan Wheels tire manufacturer in Scarborough, and the family’s financial position began to improve. In addition, in exchange for residing in the house across the street from the business, the family—primarily adolescent sons Jim and John—would work at the tire factory as janitors and security guards, doing eight-hour shifts from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m.
