He left Beijing and fled to Taipei with his family after enduring harassment and threats from the Chinese government. He was previously a BBC journalist in Shanghai. He previously worked as a journalist in Seoul. Sudworth began his professional career as a correspondent for BBC Radio 4 in January 2003. He was appointed in 2007.

Since September 2015, Sudworth has served as the BBC’s Beijing correspondent. Until March 20, 2021, he was located in Beijing, China. In 2017, Sudworth and his video team were assaulted and coerced into signing a confession in a Chinese town. In 2020, he received a George Polk Award for his reporting on the Xinjiang detention camps.

Sudworth, a BBC Shanghai journalist, was diagnosed with Bell’s palsy in October 2012. There are no warning indications of the illness, and most patients wake up unable to move half of their face. It causes patients to have one eye open all the time, sometimes for months at a time. With just one eye able to blink, people may appear to be winking at others.  John continued to broadcast on television during this period. After almost a year, his face gradually healed.
