Jon Kortajarena Career
Kortajarena was spotted in September 2003, when she was 18 years old, while on vacation with a friend who had been invited to a fashion show in Barcelona. He was recognized by a booker, who urged him to try his hand at the fashion industry. His first professional appearance was in a Roberto Verino presentation during Madrid Fashion Week. He left his homeland of Bilbao to pursue a career in the fashion industry in Paris.
He debuted as the face of Just Cavalli for Roberto Cavalli’s spring campaign in 2004, launching his career. He debuted in international fashion shows for Emporio Armani and John Galliano during the autumn Milan and Paris fashion weeks. Steven Meisel photographed Jon for Versace two months later in New York.
He has also walked for Bottega Veneta, Salvatore Ferragamo, Dolce & Gabbana, Carolina Herrera, John Galliano, Giorgio Armani, and Chanel in Milan and Paris.
Kortajarena starred in a TV commercial for the sugar-free Fanta Z “Mediterraneo” in 2005, mocking the defunct Fanta Lite. Because the ad material elicited negative reactions in the United Kingdom, it was limited to broadcasting after 9 p.m.
In 2007, Kortajarena signed with GUESS?, and in 2008, he renewed his contract with the fashion house. With new campaigns on the horizon, Terry Richardson photographed Kortajarena alongside Noah Mills for Tom Ford, and he went on to become the label’s iconic male model for the next two seasons.
He also appeared on the cover of L’Officiel Hommes magazine’s spring/summer 2008 issue, which dedicated 200 pages to him under the title “200 Pages of Fashion with Jon Kortajarena.” This was the first time a male model had done so, and as a result, it became a benchmark in the industry; Andres Velencoso and Arthur Sales were among the models that followed in his footsteps.
For the first time, Jon was art directed and photographed by Tom Ford himself for the spring men’s wear and eyewear advertising campaigns in 2009. He starred in advertisements for Esprit, H&M, and True Trussardi in 2010. He also modeled alongside Alexa Chung for Pepe Jeans’ fall/winter campaign.
In 2011, he was chosen to model for Lacoste’s “Unconventional Chic” advertising campaign. The ads were filmed by Marcus and Mert and featured models wearing the classic white Lacoste polo shirts over eveningwear. Kortajarena was on the front cover of Vogue Spain in March 2011, alongside Anja Rubik and fellow Spaniard Andres Velencoso.
After being described as “an image of charm and masculinity,” he earned another job as the protagonist for the special video version of Roberto Cavalli Men’s Spring/Summer 2012 runway. He also performed at the Palazzo Serbelloni in Milan, where he opened the show. For the fall advertisements, he was photographed by famed photographer Peter Lindbergh and became the face of David Yurman for the third time.
