Gordon-Levitt was born in Los Angeles to a Jewish family and began acting as a youngster in films such as A River Runs Through It (1992), Angels in the Outfield (1994), and Holy Matrimony (1994), for which he received a Young Artist Award and a Saturn Award nomination.
He was nominated for three Screen Actors Guild Awards for his performance as Tommy Solomon in the TV series 3rd Rock from the Sun (1996–2001).
