Cooley is best recognized for his part as Riley in the Pixar film Inside Out (2015) and his work as a filmmaker on Riley’s First Date? a short film. Toy Story 4 (2019), the fourth film episode in the Toy Story film franchise series, was his first feature film as a filmmaker.

Joe Ranft persuaded Cooley to work as an intern at Pixar Animation Studios, where he mostly worked as a storyboard artist on films such as Up (2009), The Incredibles (2004), Ratatouille (2007), Cars (2006), and Cars 2 (2011). For Pixar and Walt Disney Pictures, in 2009, Cooley wrote and directed the short film George & A.J.

Cooley worked on the film Inside Out in 2015 as a scriptwriter and storyboard supervisor. Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures distributed the film on June 19, 2015. In the same year, he wrote and directed Riley’s First Date, a short film that was released in conjunction with the Blu-ray release of Inside Out. With Pixar’s Toy Story 4, Cooley debuted as a film director in 2019.
