She interned at CBS Morning News with Andy Cohen, the host of the program she would later lead, for one season while still a student and worked as a desk assistant for ABC NewsOne for another. She distributed copies of the faxes she had duplicated and took calls. For the following three years, she was subsequently given a promotion to producer. She relocated to Dayton, Ohio, where she now works as a local news reporter for WDTN-TV. On The Talk, Chen asserted that her news director at the time in Dayton told her that her “Asian eyes” would prevent her from becoming a news anchor.

As an anchor for CBS Morning News, CBS This Morning, and later The Early Show, Chen collaborated with Bryant Gumbel, Hannah Storm, Jane Clayson, Harry Smith,  Erica Hill, Maggie Rodriguez, and Rene Syler.
She served as a co-host of CBS’s The Early Show before ceasing to host it daily but continuing to serve as a special contributing anchor until the show was cancelled. She was a weekend anchor and reporter for WCBS-TV in New York City. Sheryl Underwood co-hosted The Talk in 2012 with Julie Chen, Sharon Osbourne, Sara Gilbert, Aisha Tyler, and Sheryl Underwood. She has also presided over the American version of Big Brother. The entire first season (2000).

She reiterated the moniker while talking about mugs made in her likeness after announcing triumphantly, “I am the Chenbot!” during a segment on The Early Show. The Discussion, a daytime chat program on CBS that debuted on 18 October 2010, had Chen as its co-host and moderator.
Chen, Leah Remini, Holly Robinson Peete, Sharon Osbourne, Marissa Jaret Winokur,  Sara Gilbert, the show’s creator, and others also made appearances. In a recorded statement on 18 September 2018, Chen stated that she will not be returning to The Talk because she needed to “spend more time at home with [her] spouse” in the wake of several sexual assault allegations against her husband Les Moonves.
