She happens to be the eldest of two kids who were born to Mary Jo “M. J.” Shannon, who possessed a children’s clothing store, and engineer Robert True “Bob” Houghton (1931–1975). M. J. and Bob separated when she was seven years old, leaving her and her younger sister, Karen Casey (born 1958) to be raised by their mother. M. J. eventually remarried, to businessman Harry Shannon (1926–2003), who assisted in raising her and Karen. She got a brother, Steven “Steve” Shannon, through her mother’s marriage to Harry.
Shannon’s business partner apparently left with all of the company’s capital three months after relocating to Oxnard, California, so the family returned to San Diego. She did work in San Diego at Shannon & Company, her mother’s children’s clothing store.
