In the Zhongguancun High-tech Industrial Park in Beijing, he established Jingdong, a distributor of magneto-optical products, in June 1998. At the time, there were many counterfeit goods on the market, and Jingdong concentrated on supplying genuine products. When Jingdong was established, it was given the Chinese names Liu Qiangdong and Gong Xiaojing (or), his then-girlfriend who had also earned a degree from Renmin University of China. A breakup was announced in 2003.
12 physical outlets under the Jingdong name had been launched by Liu by 2003.

When Jingdong’s staff and clients were forced to stay at home due to the SARS pandemic in 2003, Liu was forced to reconsider his business strategy and switch to online sales. The outbreak cost Liu’s business more than 8 million yuan. Liu started his first online store in 2004 and later that year he formed JD.com (short for Jingdong). In 2005, Liu closed all of his brick-and-mortar locations and shifted to an online sales strategy.

Liu declined an offer of 18 million yuan to sell JD.com made to him in 2005. For JD.com, Liu adopted a full-category approach in 2007, changing the company’s business model from consumer electronics to a variety of goods.
