Matthew Trebek Career
Oso was the first restaurant in Matthew’s hospitality empire, which he founded with business partner Nodar Mosiashvili and chef Cassandra Rhodes in 2015. It’s a popular Mexican street food joint, prompting Matt to launch Lucille’s, a cocktail bar and event space in the neighborhood, in 2019. He later extended the business by opening Pizza By Lucille’s, a take-out pizza establishment next door. “Lucille” is named after Matt’s grandmother, who is also the mother of his father, Alex Trebek.
Matthew and his business partners traveled to Mexico City to study how to create local specialties such as homemade tortillas, tacos, and fruit salads before beginning the company.
Trebek’s interest in the hotel sector grew throughout his time as a part-time bartender in college and afterward. During that period, he also met Nodar, who was his bartending mentor at the Library Hotel, and chef Cassie, who he met while working at the Manhattan restaurant Willow Road.
During an interview, he said that when he originally told his father about the restaurant business idea, he was not overjoyed. This was due to the fact that the restaurant success rate at the time was not particularly high. “He really jumped on board” when he saw the space and saw the effort his son and business partner were putting into it.
Lucille’s Family Meal by Matthew Trebek
Lucille’s Family Meal is a weekly soup kitchen idea through which Matthew and his company give back to the community by feeding those in North Harlem who are poor or in transitional housing. Every Wednesday, this weekly supper is served at St. Matthew’s Baptist Church.
The meal venue is designed to look like a restaurant’s dining room, with large tables covered in tablecloths and cutlery, as well as chairs donated by the church’s congregation. Volunteers serve the guests, allowing them to skip the buffet lines.
Chefs Cassandra Rhoades and Nicholas Cerda are in charge of creating the Lucille’s Family Meal meals, while Matthew, Alex, and Alexander plate the food once it’s delivered to the church.
