Barbaro started hosting The Daily, the Times’ first five-day weekly podcast, in February 2017.

The Daily had a one-million-daily listenership in its first year. The 20–30-minute-long episodes of the podcast have been a huge hit, and they were the number one podcast in the US every month of 2019. Despite the fact that the Times has a number of other podcasts, The Daily generates the majority of the paper’s audio revenue.

Meredith Kopit Levien, the newspaper’s president, and CEO stated in August 2020 that The Daily had more than 3.5 million daily subscribers, a “vastly greater” viewership than both the daily and Sunday editions of the New York Times. For both Spotify and Apple users in 2020, The Daily was the most popular US news podcast. After privately pressing several journalists to back up their criticism of the New York Times podcast Caliphate, Barbaro apologized in January 2021.
