Scholz’s family is historically Lutheran, and he was baptized in Germany’s Evangelical Church; he maintains generally secular ideas and left the Church as an adult, although he has advocated for a greater understanding of the country’s Christian background and culture.
Britta Ernst, another SPD politician, is Olaf Scholz’s wife. Prior to coming to Potsdam in 2018, the pair lived in Hamburg’s Altona region. Since 14 March 2018, he has functioned as Germany’s Minister of Finance and Vice-Chancellor under Chancellor Angela Merkel. He served as the First Mayor of Hamburg from 2011-2018, and from 2009 to 2019, he served as the Deputy Leader of the Social Democratic Party (SPD). Scholz served in the Bundestag from 1998 to 2011, including as a member of the Hamburg Government under First Mayor Ortwin Runde in 2001 and as General Secretary of the SPD in 2002, when he served with SPD leader and Chancellor Gerhard Schröder. He then became Chief Whip of his party in the Bundestag after leaving office as General Secretary in 2004, and later became Minister of Labor and Social Affairs in the First Merkel Government in 2007.
Scholz returned to lead the SDP in Hamburg when the SPD exited the government following the 2009 election and was also chosen as the SPD’s Deputy Leader. He became First Mayor in 2011 after leading his party to victory in the elections, a position he held until 2018. Scholz was named Minister of Finance and Vice-Chancellor of Germany when the SPD was elected to the Fourth Merkel Government in 2018.
Scholz ran for the SPD’s newly-introduced dual leadership in 2019 on a ticket with former Brandenburg state delegate Klara Geywitz. Despite receiving the most votes in the first round, the duo was defeated by Norbert Walter-Borjans and Saskia Esken in the subsequent run-off, with 45 percent of the vote. He then resigned as Deputy Leader of the House of Commons. He was selected as the SPD’s candidate for Chancellor of Germany in the 2021 federal election by the SPD party executive on August 10, 2020.
