He formed a Bible study group with seven persons and his wife in their Saddleback Valley apartment in Orange County, California, in January 1980. Warren organized Saddleback Church’s first public service on Easter Sunday in April 1980 in the Laguna Hills High School Theater, with 200 people in attendance. Warren’s church construction techniques resulted in fast development, with the church utilizing nearly 80 different structures over the course of its 35-year history.

Warren gained national notoriety in August 2008 when he organized the Civil Forum on the Presidency at Saddleback Church, which featured Senators John McCain and Barack Obama.

In December 2008, President-elect Barack Obama chose Warren to give the invocation at his inauguration event. Warren and the Reader’s Digest Association teamed up in January 2009 to produce Intent-Driven Link, a quarterly periodical sold as part of a multimedia package. The partners declared in November 2009 that the magazine had not attracted enough paying subscribers and that it will be discontinued after the fourth issue was published that month.
