Ron Bird KUTV 2News – Career

Ron Bird has worked as an anchor and reporter on the morning and noon broadcasts at KUTV 2News since August 1989. Ron started his broadcasting career in 1981 as an anchor/reporter for KBCI in Boise, Idaho, and worked for the CBS affiliate in Fargo, North Dakota, before joining the 2News team. Bird has spent 33 years co-hosting 2News This Morning and 2News At Noon. “I’m the happiest guy on the planet,” he says, adding, “to be able to work at KUTV and realize my dream.” Ron was born and raised in the small town of Kimberly, Idaho, in southern Idaho. He says that as a first-grader, “I knew I wanted to be a news reporter and was laser-focused on that goal.”

Ron started his TV news profession in Boise, Idaho, and then briefly in Fargo, North Dakota, before getting his dream job on the morning program at KUTV, after working at an FM radio station as a youth and graduating from BYU with a communications degree.

Ron has covered many of the significant stories that have shaped Utah’s history during his time at KUTV. He and longtime co-anchor Mary Nickles were on the air as a tornado slammed downtown Salt Lake City. Ron and Mary began KUTV’s all-day local coverage on 11 September 2001. A 5.7 magnitude earthquake struck Salt Lake City in March 2020, while Ron and Mary were in the air. They made the switch to 24/7 emergency coverage, for which they received an Emmy nomination.
“It’s incredible to be on the cutting edge of history and be able to share it with our passionate fans,” Ron says.

Ron is interested in both epic and mundane stories. His “Ron on the Run” segment is an unplanned look at people and situations that don’t get much attention yet have a huge impact. Ron has written about cops and crime, elections, and in-depth portraits of Utah’s modern pioneers, among other subjects. “Riding in an F-16 with the Air Force Thunderbirds was one of the most memorable experiences of my life.” Aside from journalism, Ron enjoys going to the gym, playing guitar, doing house and yard maintenance, and is currently trying out pickleball as a new sport.
