Sue Turton started her professional career on national television as a reporter for Sky News’ features department. She went on to freelance for LWT and MTV before taking a role as a journalist for GMTV’s new breakfast show. Turton covered the north of England, landing an exclusive with the Bruce Grobbelaar football scandal whistle-blower. In 1997, she returned to freelancing, working for Sky and ITV until joining Channel 4 News in 1998. She spent 12 years on the show as both a presenter and a journalist. Sue has won RTS Awards for her work in a variety of fields, including sports, journalism, breaking news, investigations, and international affairs.
She went on to become Al Jazeera’s first Afghanistan correspondent after quitting Channel 4. She was deployed to the Middle East ten months later to cover the Arab Spring. She reported from Libya, Syria, and Egypt during their uprisings. She has vast experience working for the channel in Iraq and Lebanon. She was one of several Al Jazeera journalists convicted of aiding and abetting a terrorist organization in Egypt in 2015. The journalists were given penalties ranging from seven to ten years in prison. Turton, who was tried in her absence, was the driving force behind the effort to liberate her three imprisoned colleagues. They were successful, yet the majority of their beliefs remain unchanged.
On July 8, 2010, this entry was published. After her conviction, Turton was made to evacuate her employment with Al Jazeera in June 2015 because it required her to travel to countries with Egypt’s extradition treaties. She now produces and directs documentaries for international broadcasters. Films about the Paris attacks, Abu Sayyaf in the Philippines, and school street brawls in Indonesia are among her most recent work.
For her efforts, she received the RTS awards.
