Ugly Phil Career

From 1993 to 1994, he co-hosted “Phil O’Neil’s Hot 30” on Triple M Adelaide with his ex-wife Jackie O (also known as Jackie Last). Later, he was hired by Fox FM, and he and his wife transferred their popular show—known as the Hot 30 Countdown—to Melbourne. When the Austereo network decided to telecast the show across the country, Phil and Jackie O moved to Sydney. There, it was broadcast on 2Day FM locally and across the country on radio stations owned by Austereo, including Fox FM Melbourne, SAFM Adelaide, B105 Brisbane, NXFM Newcastle, and FM 104.7 Canberra.

The Hot 30 would air from Monday through Friday between 7 and 10 p.m. However, the show typically lasted until 10.30 p.m., which irritated Phil’s audience-favorite presenter on the following shift.
Inadvertent late-night business clerks at gas stations, convenience stores, and other arbitrary places on the Hot 30 would get fake calls from “Ugly Phil” between 1998 and 2000. When he called, his opening line would always be, “Who are you?… Who are you?” He might also phone and complain, “You eat my dog… Why do you consume my dog?

Phil had a job at Newcastle’s New FM before his Hot 30 days. After leaving Austereo, he spent a short time working for Kiss 100 in the UK. He then came back to Australia to host a drive on Sydney’s recently founded Nova 969. Ugly Phil had the highest rating shift on Nova during the driving time slot. At the end of 2002, Ugly Phil left this position, citing management concerns as the cause.
He changed his name from “Ugly” to “The Phil O’Neil Show” in 2003 and moved to the Triple M network during the evenings. It was a first for the Triple M network and included interviews, giveaways, and light talkback. Ugly Phil’s contract was not renewed at the end of 2003 as a result of the experiment’s failure and yet another network rearrangement. When Kerrang Radio 105.2 in Birmingham, England received its license in 2004, it was claimed that he would host the breakfast shift and reintroduce the Ugly to his name. On this program, Rachel New co-hosted. The Morning After, starring Tim Shaw and Kate Lawler, has taken over the breakfast shift after Ugly Phil’s Breakfast was terminated in September 2007.
On London’s alternative radio station XFM in the fall of 2007, Phil could be heard filling in for Alex Zane on the weekends. This led to him anchoring the weekday breakfast show between Christmas and New Year’s.

In July 2008, he made a comeback to Australian airwaves by hosting a nightly show on Triple M Sydney. When the program made its debut on this day, it was given the 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. schedule. The show’s title is Ugly Phil – It’s A Rock Show. On December 1, 2008, Phil and Sami Lukis hosted the Breakfast shift on Triple M Sydney; however, the program was canceled in June 2009. At the end of June 2009, the Ugly Phil and Sami breakfast show did not return following a two-week non-ratings sabbatical.
Despite receiving the ACRA award in October 2010, Austereo decided not to renew Ugly Phil’s contract for 2011 and moved a new program called The Sweetest Plum to the late-night position on Triple M in Sydney and Melbourne.

Ugly Phil and Brad Fitzgerald will co-host the breakfast program on 96fm Perth beginning in January 2011, according to a December 2010 announcement. In October 2012, Ugly Phil began working for Star 104.5FM on the Central Coast in the drive time. Ugly Phil started working for Triple M Brisbane in 2014 before switching to Sydney in the mornings. Starting on 12 October 2015, Phil hosted The Rubber Room on Triple M. 2019 will see Phil return to the UK to headline the Fix Radio breakfast show.
Since 2020, Phil has made appearances on the midday program on Planet Rock. In July 2020, Phil made a guest appearance on WSFM before departing for Australia. On 23 November 2020, Phil officially took over WSFM’s 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. daily shift.
