In 2006, he graduated from Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) with a Master of Architecture degree. Virgil Abloh Career
He began displaying his men’s and women’s collections during Paris Fashion Week in 2014, and he launched womenswear for Off-White in 2015.
Beyoncé donned a palm-print sweater with the word Nebraska on it in Nicki Minaj’s “Feeling Myself” music video in 2015, which was a homage to Raf Simons’s Fall 2002 Virginia Creepers collection.
Off-White was a nominee for the LVMH Prize the following year. Marques’Almeida and Jacquemus, respectively, won the grand award and the special prize.
In 2016, Abloh built his first concept store in Aoyama, Tokyo. Visitors can take Off-White-branded cups for free and resale them on the secondary market at the store’s watercooler. Abloh also unveiled his Grey Area furniture collection in Milan at the same time, marking his first furniture effort under the Off-White label. There are leather cushions and Carrara marble tops on the iron-grid chairs, benches, and tables.
In a work-in-progress approach, Abloh re-created ten of Nike’s iconic shapes, each with a safety tag around the laces. The limited release piqued the interest of the sneaker community, and Abloh held panels and workshops with Nike, as well as more releases, throughout the year.
